Personal Property Rendition
For-profit
businesses in Texas are required by law to annually
file a confidential report with the Appraisal District
for their county. The State Comptroller's form is given
here, but Travis CAD joins the majority of Appraisal
Districts in gently requiring use of their own form
to facilitate processing.
A
bit of professional advice:
If
your business personal property tax bill exceeds $10,000
per year, you need help.
Much
controversy surrounds business personal property rendition.
Some Appraisal Districts have used very aggressive subpeona
strategies to bludgeon taxpayers who refuse to surrender
prioprietary business infomation. Reprisals against
taxpayers include dramatic value increases so painful
as to eventually flush out the internal business data
sought by tax officials.
Travis
and Williamson CAD's aren't on the agressive side, but
they do require full disclosure to deviate from valuations
generated by their computer profiling of businesses
in your same industry. The modelling is notoriously
inaccurate when applied to mom-and-pop operations or
to long established businesses whose assets should be
fully depreciated.
